An evocative, vintage Japanese woodblock print by Eiichi Kotozuka (1906-1979), entitled "Night Rain in Rakuhoku (Kyoto)". It is the large Oban size of 40 cm x 27 cm. (or 15-3/4" x 10-3/4") - visible size in frame. It has the Uchida publisher's mark on the lower right, it is in a 23" x 18-1/2" black finished wood frame, carved in the style of bamboo wood (it possibly may be bamboo or could be another wood, the wood is entirely painted). The scene is stark and striking. It is done in blacks, greys and barely tinted dark blue with yellow highlights; the rain is in thin streaks with silvery flashes. Probably dating to the 1940s or 1950s, it has a Joske's of Texas gallery label on the back, and it is in excellent condition with no visible fading, soiling, foxing, rips or tears, losses, damage or repairs. An Ellis Bros. gold filled fancy pocket watch with a 15J Cyma 777 four adjustment movement from the 1920s. This 1-3/4" open face man's pocket watch features a hand engraved gold plated face with a single sunk second hand dial and purple finished metal hands. Ellis Brothers was taken over by Birks in the late 1920s and this watch has an Ellis branded Swiss Cyma 777 15 jewel movement with four adjustments. The works are 34mm. across, size 4 or 15 ligne. It is stem wind and it has a 20 year gold filled Wadsworth Referee case with the number 6916315. It has the inscription "PRESENTED TO HAROLD A. DUMPHY BY THE STAFF OF ELLIS BROS. 1926" and it has a fancy AHD monogram on the back of the case. This watch is in very good condition with a bit of face soiling - the works are clean however the hands adjust in all positions of the winder but the winder doesn't engage. An enamel cigarette case with mottled amber and taupe decoration from the 1930s. This Art Deco vintage 3-3/4" x 3-1/8" smoking accessory features deep and medium brown mottled enamel and the fittings are gold plated. An enamel sterling silver school ring from the 1930s 1940s from the Hanover High School, Hanover Ontario. Established in 1924 this school added "District" to the name in 1953 and amalgamated in 1968 to become the John Diefenbaker Secondary School. This 5/8 x 9/16" wide ring features the school crest with yellow and cobalt blue enamel, which doubtless are the school colours and it also has their school motto "ENTER TO LEARN GO FORTH TO SERVE". School rings haven't been made this way for many years. It weighs 5.7 grams, it is stamped STERLING with a maker's mark and a maple leaf in a C mark (denoting Canadian jewellery) and it is in very good intact condition with no chips, cracks, dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs; there is some patination and rubbing from wear. An English late Victorian mother of pearl handle fish set for six in fitted case 1890 1900. This set includes six 6-1/2" fish forks and six 7-3/8" scimitar-shaped fish knives. Each piece has a sterling silver patterned ferrule with silver plated blades and colourful genuine mother-of-pearl handles. The purple satin and velvet interior of the box has fitted compartments with locking brass fittings. A Fry Geisha etched glass lemonade pitcher plus 5 handled tumbler glasses circa 1900-1930. This attractive, high quality set also goes by the names Japanese Maid or Japan Maid and it was made by Fry Glass. Similar to a Beaver Valley glass pattern featuring all over cherry blossoms, this company was bought out by Fry circa 1900 and they made this finely etched set with a Geisha serving tea on one side and cherry blossoms on the other. The 10-3/8" tall pitcher has a faceted cut-style handle and a rayed base and it includes five matching low handled 5-1/4" lemonade tumblers which also have rayed bases. The etching is very fine and this super set is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, damage or repairs other than a bit of factory roughness to the pitcher's foot rim which also has a shallow burst bubble leaving a small rough area on the rim. A Fukagawa double gourd vase 1900-20. This fine quality and likely late vintage Meiji-Taishō era 4-3/8" tall Japanese porcelain hand painted vase is by the renowned Fukagawa Porcelain Company firm of Japan c1900-20. This vase has a blue tassel and two painted small floral groups in gold, green, orange and black. There is a gold upper rim. The mark is the Mount Fuji and stream with the Fukagawa signature, identified on gotheborg.com as being is used from 1900-20. We were also informed this was purchased in the 1920s. The darkness under the base is old glue from an applies felt bottom which is no longer present (we will clean the glue residue before shipment). A genuine 3 strand angel coral necklace with a carved coral drop from the 1980s. This wonderful and scarce necklace features three strands of genuine white and orange/pink angel hair coral 5.3 mm. beads and three baroque pearl and two gold bead spacers per strand. We haven't tested the gold but the coral tests as genuine and it is undyed and original in colour. The shortest strand is 28" and the hand carved floral drop measures 1-3/8 x 3/4". The workmanship is very fine and the drop's tiny linking coral beads are as small as 1.7 mm. Before Rolling Stone turned into an irrelevant pile of commercial crap over 40 years ago, it was at the vanguard of the "Underground Press" - a crude newspaper devoted to the counterculture, drugs, music, uncensored political and sexual expression and all things Hippie. Fortunately, being Canadian, the Georgia Straight of Vancouver carried on the anarchistic torch for a few years after RS gave it up, giving us a ribald and unfettered underground newspaper sold in the British Columbia area. From r-rated underground comics (the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (FFFB) by Gilbert Shelton, Fat Freddie's Cat, and others) to interviews with counterculture icons, this paper is a window on a long-gone world of late 1960s ideals (it started around the same time as RS in 1967). A vintage single row 10 button plus 5 bass button German maade Hohner accordion or melodeon. This example features ornate gold stencilling on the black patinated wood, orange bellows and a pierced chrome plated grille. This unit is clean and fully functional (and LOUD) and the straps and bellows are in superb condition. A superbly rendered and atmospheric lifetime woodblock print by the famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), titled "Ikegami Honmonji Temple" (Honmonji Temple in Snow). First published in 1931, this is an artist's lifetime strike from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. This print is Oban size (14-1/4" x 9-1/2" image size, 19-3/4" x 14-1/4" frame size). It has the 6 mm. red lifetime seal of the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (seal used from 1946-57). It comes in a red-painted bamboo-style frame from that time period, with framing notations on the backing cardboard as well as the original Eaton's frame department sticker. This print is in excellent condition with no losses, tears, foxing, fading, damage or repairs. The frame has some flaking of the red paint on the frame (the shiny paint is about 50% gone however the red stain and black painted highlights remain). There is some minor browning to the paper not affecting the image. Please note we have a similar print from the same period also available. An Italian mosaic pin brooch and screw back earrings from the 1930s-40s. This attractive set features multicoloured roses and flowers on a turquoise ground. The glass tesserae are quite fine and they are set in filigree wirework gold plated brass. The pin measures 2 x 1-3/8" and the screwback earrings are 3/4 x 5/8". An Italy roses tulips faience handled cake platter or plate from the 1950s which is completely hand painted. This exuberantly decorated serving plate has blue trim and wild red roses, yellow and brown tulips and other flowers. It has two eared handles and this Italian ceramic or pottery decorative item is signed FNA 127 and it is impressed ITALY. acob Grimminger sterling silver julep cups or flat goblets circa 1910 1920. These hand hammered tumblers are 3-1/4" in height, made and marked by Jacob Grimminger of Gmund, Germany (established 1895). Being sterling rather than 800 silver, these cups were most likely made for export and they have an Arts and Crafts hammered finish consistent with cups of this period. They weigh from 86.8 to 92.6 grams. They are in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs. There are three in stock. All condition issues are noted. A Japan 3 footed pink lustre fruit cup and saucer from the 1930s. This vintage 3" high cup and matching 5-5/8" saucer features a dusty pink ground on the saucer and the outside of the cup, which has a white interior with an oil-puddle like multicolour luster. The highlight is a colourful fruit still life on the saucer and small fruit arrays inside the cup. It has gold trim, three gold painted feet and gold sprigs. A Meiji period Japanese natural paper, bamboo and iron hanging Chōchin lantern in its original wood box. It consists of the ebonized hand-cut and bentwood hanger which has iron fittings with handcut nails. It opens around a pinion for mounting. The 8-3/4" diameter lantern is formed from handmade paper fiber and it has a bentwood collar and base with iron fittings. The top fitting has a handle for hanging and the bottom has fittings for hanging depending on the location. The loop is for securing to the hanger, and the interior of the base has a chain also for hanging and a spike for securing a candle. It has the circled feathers Kamon (also called Mon, or a Japanese family crest) painted in black on the paper as well as Japanese letters. The 12" x 5-3/4" box stands 11-1/4" high and it is darkly stained and also has the mon (family symbol) on the front. The lid has a carved carapace, and it is assembled with handmade finishing nails as well. The work and carving are simple and beautiful, and this lantern is a definite prize, especially since it has survived in such good condition and it has the original fittings and box (which has a taped business card with a note in Japanese in the lid). We have owned just a few of the vintage smaller individual lanterns of this type that are usually carried by a person - this type of Chōchin lantern usually hands from a structure. We have never run across an antique example like this with the box. This lamp is in excellent condition with the expected signs of age, including slight rubbing on the box edges, some minor splits and small holes to the old paper and some minor losses or chipping to the Japanned finish on the hanger.
