A pair of early Staffordshire figurines of eagles on vermicular or marble painted bases from 1820-1850. These well modelled heavily gilded 19thC English earthenware eagles are 7-3/4" tall. Both have tilted heads and back-stretched wings. They have purple, yellow and orange marble-like painting on the simple rectangular shape bases. The mustard yellow rocky perches have a blue flower. They not signed with a manufacturer's stamp, unfortunately fairly common with Staffordshire figures. They are in very good, but not undamaged condition. One is undamaged with only a firing crack, which is original to the manufacture of the figurines (see image), and the other has had the lower portion of one wing and the head re-glued. Some wear to the gilding. The breaks and repair are quite clean and it could be restored professionally. The only pair of Staffordshire eagles I have owned in over 40 years selling antiques. The firing crack is very small with only small expected disturbances (including slight browning to the beak of one eagle) which don't detract from the appeal of these unusual figurines. This is a 10-1/2" x 8-1/2" ball-footed swing-handle serving basket fully hallmarked for Sheffield, England 1895-6. Made by James Dixon & Sons, this basket has ornate repousse decoration in the bowl as well as attractive design to the ornate handle. It has a presentation inscription in the centre, as it was presented as a gift in September 1896, and it weighs an impressive 595 grams. Besides the hallmarks, it is also stamped 1618P and B3916, at least one of which refers to the design. This item is in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs. A lovely pair of oil on panel paintings c1900 by Charles MacDonald Manly (Canadian, 1855-1924) ARCA, OSA. Born in England, he came to Canada at an early age. He returned to Europe to study at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin (1881-84). On his return to Canada, he became a founding member of the Toronto Arts Students League. He was an active member of the ARCA (Royal Canadian Academy of Art) and the OSA (Ontario Society of Artists, president in 1903). Highly regarded as a teacher, illustrator, painter and engraver, his works are in the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada and the Dominion Gallery in Montreal, among others. Chiefly known for his watercolours, he was an able painter in both oil and watercolour as well as an accomplished pen and ink illustrator; he also did lithographs and pastels. These paintings were done around 1900 (and framed in the 1960s-70s). The water rapids scene is untitled (sight size 8" x 5-1/2", frame 13-1/2" x 11") and the other is titled "On the Don" (sight size 8" x 5-5/8", frame size 13" x 10-3/4"). The inscription on the back describes the Don River in Toronto, and the ink inscription also says "By C.M. Manly, A.R.C.A. F.H. Brigden executa" (Frederick Brigden was a friend and fellow member of the TASL and OSA, with whom Manly went on sketching trips in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes from 1894-1906, so presumably Frederick Brigden did the preliminary sketch for that painting). Both paintings are signed on the front C.M.M. These works of art are in excellent original condition with no craquelure, tears, soiling, fading, frame damage, losses, damage or repairs. This retro brooch with three claw-set round brilliant cut genuine diamonds circa 1950s is well-made; it measures 2-1/8" x 1-1/4" pin is stamped 18 K and BIRKS. A Grenfell flying Canada geese 23" x 15" hooked mat wall hanging with label from the 1920s-30s. This fine and vintage beauty depicts two flying Canada geese over green and tan pine trees. It has the fine work typical of Grenfell with the expected mix of various fabrics. The colours include tan, brown, cream, black, grey and copper and it has the original Grenfell Labrador Industries red on white sewn label on the underside. It also has two sewn corners with metal eyelets for hanging on a wall which are probably original (and appear to be made of bra straps - Grenfell used whatever materials that were donated). A Birks 14K gold charm bracelet with 7 different 14k or 18K figural charms circa 1930s and possibly later. The bracelet itself is 7-1/2" long and the loops are 1/4" at widest. The charms are:
- an 18k gold ladies figure skate with a white painted enamel except for the skate inner flap, which is red. About 1/5 of the enamel is worn, otherwise quite intact. 3/4" x 5/8".
- a moveable 18k Italian Commedia dell'Arte sad clown figure. He is not always shown with the pointed cap, and the face is a bird mask. Modern versions of this figure rarely show that cap, now it is usually a rounded one. His arms and legs move freely. The large round raised dots are meant to represent his oversized pompoms. 1-3/8" tall.
- a 14k Spanish bullfighter/toreador with cape and bull. 7/8" tall.
- an 18k Venetian gondola boat with gondolier figure. 1-1/8" length.
an 18k donkey or pack animal with harness and saddle. 3/4" x 1/2" tall
- a 14k horn - it is either an older bugle horn or a traditional hunting horn. 3/4" x 1/2". (585 mark).
- an 18k bucket with handle containing a champagne bottle (European hallmarks, possibly French). 3/4" tall.
The bracelet is stamped BIRKS and 14Kt on one side. The charms are all stamped on the charms or on the attached loops. The charm measurements do not include the bale loops as part of the height measurement. The bale loops are all soldered except for the figure skate. The bracelet weight is 21.1 grams. An English Georgian period pair of hand painted soft paste porcelain cake bowls or baskets made by Derby, England circa 1800 1825 (this firm was later known as Royal Crown Derby). These 11" x 8-1/4" baskets have the red painted Derby mark of this period, and they feature wonderful floral hand painted sprays and gilding. This is a genuine English sterling silver William IV teapot fully hallmarked for London, England 1837. This table serving piece measures 11-1/4" from spout to handle and it has a wonderful bolt-mounted floral finial. It has fine leaf and flower repousse decoration throughout and it stands on four fancy feet. It has the maker's mark for the respected English silversmith firm of Edward, Edward Jr., John and W. Barnard and it weighs an impressive 810 grams. This excellent survivor is in very good condition with no bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than a dent on one panel at the shoulder and some looseness at the insulating spacer at the top of the handle from an old repair (the handle wobbles a little). A matching 18k yellow gold rubies pearl and blue enamel necklace and brooch set circa 1960s by Uno-A-Erre. This set consists of the 1-1/4" across brooch with a safety catch and the 17-3/4" lavaliere type necklace with a satin finish clasp (the clasp is the same design as used for pearl necklaces). Each piece has cobalt enamelled flower petals with central genuine claw-set rubies, and there are a few random spots with a soft pink enamel around the leaves. The 1" x 1-3/8" pendant has an enamelled drop with a 5.2 mm genuine cultured pearl. Each piece is stamped with a full set of Italian marks - both the 750 (18K) mark and the company city mark (1 AR for Uno A Erre of Arezzo) are in a coffin shaped mark (used in Italy before 1968) and there is an additional mark with UNO AR, which is for Uno A Erre, a highly regarded fine quality Arezzo jewellery firm.
