A 14k yellow gold birdcage or byzantine chain necklace weighing 15.5 grams. This ornate 20-1/4" chain is 1/8" wide and it has a lobster claw clasp. It has various marks including 585 14K and ITALY. We have tested the clasp, loop and clasp eye as well as the chain itself and all test as 14k gold. The Italians are renowned for their chains and this one is high quality with hollow links (hence the relatively light weight). A Pforzheim Germany plique-a-jour enamel Arts and Crafts necklace from the 1910 era. This stunning survivor from the Edwardian era was made in the Pforsheim area of Germany which was the center of such items. Plique-a-jour (French: "Light of Day") refers to the labour-intensive technique of repeatedly firing enamel in metal-bordered cells resembling cloisonne, resulting in unbacked transluscent panels. This fine example measures 1-7/8 x 15/16", it has a baroque pearl drop and a pink tourmaline in silver (800 grade or better) with pale lavender purple enamel panels. The best exponent of this work was the firm of Levinger & Bissinger who were prime exponents of the Jugendstil movement. Included is a contemporary associated arts and crafts 25-3/8" chain (stamped STERLING on the hook and eye clasp) from which is suspended the pendant on a 4-1/8" drop with a hook suspension. The pendant has an impossible to read mark which appears to be a diamond cartouche containing a B and a possible animal head - a silver mark but as yet unidentified. This piece looks like the work of Levinger & Bissinger but we are unable to definitively confirm it's one of their pieces. This rarity weighs 7.1 grams and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs; a couple of enamel panels show natural striations form their manufacturing process. A 14K Australian black opal ring circa 1960s with intense color. This vintage opal is a genuine opal gem stone, most likely from the Andamooka area in Australia. It has been sugared (treated with sugar and acid) to deepen the colour. Andamooka opals can be great quality, but treating them to intensify the color has been done for many years. The setting is an abstract modern design in 14 K yellow gold, custom made for the opal. It is a size 7-3/4 or 7.75 and the opal is a cabochon opal measuring 24mm x 12mm x 4.4mm - approximately 7 carats in size. It has a fantastic colour play including intense red, green, blue, gold, orange and purple. Our pictures don't do this stone justice, and the view of the ring on a hand shows the intensity of the colours. It is stamped 14 K and this is a genuine opal all through, not a doublet. It comes with a recent independent professional gemological appraisal for $3500 CAD which does mention the sugar enhancement, so it is factored into the value given. The ring weighs 7.3 gr. An enamel sterling silver school ring from the 1930s 1940s from the Hanover High School, Hanover Ontario. Established in 1924 this school added "District" to the name in 1953 and amalgamated in 1968 to become the John Diefenbaker Secondary School. This 5/8 x 9/16" wide ring features the school crest with yellow and cobalt blue enamel, which doubtless are the school colours and it also has their school motto "ENTER TO LEARN GO FORTH TO SERVE". School rings haven't been made this way for many years. An 800 silver Art Nouveau floral German napkin ring circa 1900. This high style, high relief table decor item measures 1-1/2" wide and 1-7/8" across the interior. The beautiful design goes around the outside and it has a fancy Gothic B monogram as well as a full set of hallmarks from Germany. It also has the maker's mark for Franz Mosgau of Berlin (est. 1807) and this item dates to the 1895-1900 era. It is in very good condition with a small dent/rim split at the top rim of the napkin ring which is at the seam where the silver was soldered into a ring. It has various small and shallow dents and bends most of which are most likely from the hand forming and embossing of this item. An Art Deco sterling and gold front step side signet ring from the 1920s. This size 5-1/2 ring has a central 9/16 x 5/16" overlay gold front with a Gothic letter (an E or F, we think) with a corner hand engraved embellishment. The flanks are engraved gold as well and the mount has stepped sides. It is marked STERLING with faint signs of other marks which have been lost due to resizing in the past.
