A set of 4 Chinese Qing dynasty tea bowls and saucers. These antique porcelain blue and white 1-5/8" tall tea bowls or cups and 4-5/8" wide saucers date from 1736-1795. It is possible they are slightly older. This antique Chinese porcelain set has a man on a horse holding a small twig, followed by a servant carrying provisions. The background shows a tree starting to flower. My interpretation is that he was looking for indications that winter is over, so the important work of spring can begin. The scenes are the same on the saucers and the outside of the cups, decorated borders, and interior flowers in the cups (possibly prunus/plum), but everything is hand painted, so no pieces are identical. These tea bowls were more likely produced for the Chinese rather than European taste. The porcelain is a fine quality. All pieces are unmarked, and they are in reasonably good condition, but with no losses, damage or repairs other than sone very fine edge chips on the cups and a fine partial hairline crack in one saucer. Please note that all pieces have the expected glaze irregularities including burst bubbles, tiny firing cracks on the bottom rim of one cup, bottom rim chips on one saucer, and a few tiny firing pits/dark kiln specks from the manufacture of these pieces. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. A late 18thC Qing Dynasty Canton enamel bowl. This high quality bowl has original gilding and it dates to circa 1770 - 1800. This lobed quatrefoil shaped bowl measures 7-3/4" x 6-1/4" and it is 3-1/8" in height. The enamelling is particularly fine, done to the Chinese taste. The rim of the bowl retains much of its original gilding. The interior is a pale blue enamel, the bottom is speckled white. The upper rim has a Greek key design border. While it doesn't appear to have been much used other than decoratively, this bowl was likely made to be a jardiniere, and may have been used as that previously. It is in excellent condition for its age, with no corrosion, apparent losses, damage or repairs other than a slight touch of wear to the gilding on the edges and some minor discolouration spots to the interior enamel.
