All Items : Estate Jewelry : Gold : Victorian : Pre 1900 item #1434139 (stock #9915)
A Victorian 14k gold synthetic sapphire seed pearls leaf pin brooch from 1880-1890. This attractive2-1/8 x 5/8" brooch is of hollow construction and it has a finely tooled pinioned leaf with seed pearls and a claw-set synthetic sapphire. Fine gem stones like emeralds or sapphires were very expensive in the 19th and early 20th century, so synthetic gems were often used even in gold jewelry. The pearls are natural with the expected surface irregularities and this pin is unmarked but tests as 14k gold. It has the repositioned original c-clasp (the pin closure itself is gold filled) and the leaf rotates around it's original pinion. This pin weighs 4.1 grams and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, dents, bends, corrosion, damage or repairs other than the relocation of the original clasp. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Expedited tracked and insured parcel shipping to the U.S. starts at $23 (other spots may vary, air is higher). Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. A pair of early Staffordshire figurines of eagles on vermicular or marble painted bases from 1820-1850. These well modelled heavily gilded 19thC English earthenware eagles are 7-3/4" tall. Both have tilted heads and back-stretched wings. They have purple, yellow and orange marble-like painting on the simple rectangular shape bases. The mustard yellow rocky perches have a blue flower. They not signed with a manufacturer's stamp, unfortunately fairly common with Staffordshire figures. They are in very good, but not undamaged condition. One is undamaged with only a firing crack, which is original to the manufacture of the figurines (see image), and the other has had the lower portion of one wing and the head re-glued. Some wear to the gilding. The breaks and repair are quite clean and it could be restored professionally. The only pair of Staffordshire eagles I have owned in over 40 years selling antiques. The firing crack is very small with only small expected disturbances (including slight browning to the beak of one eagle) which don't detract from the appeal of these unusual figurines. They are in very good as-described condition with otherwise no damage or repairs other than mentioned. Shipping is by FedEx to the US (please ask for a quote) or $35.00 within Canada.

A motorcycle & sidecar tintype circa 1905 with a historic view. This scarce, very early photograph is on a late tintype (photo on treated metal blank) and this 2-3/8 x 1-5/8" (view area) image consists of a young motorcycle rider astride the bike with a rather concerned-looking grandma in the sidecar. Three other ladies stand behind her, and there is an Edmonson's Red Seal Toffee pail in the middle of the road (road hazards were a little different in those days...). It comes papered into its original cardboard mount, and this image has "GRAMMA HEMO (?), BILL DORIS LEAVING FOR CANADA" in pencil on the back. It is in very good original condition with no cracks, crazing, scrapes, bends, corrosion, damage or repairs other than some light fogging or silvering on the right side of the image. All Items : Fine Art : Drawings : Pen : Pre 1910 item #628183 (stock #5290)
A Charles Dana Gibson THE WEAKER SEX ink sketch study. We are proud to offer this original preliminary ink sketch by the famed American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the Gibson Girl. He first came to eminence as the foremost magazine illustrator of his time in the late 19th century, later in life he turned completely to painting. His long and illustrious career takes more room than alloted here to discuss, and is well covered elsewhere on the Internet. This item is a 22" x 15-1/2" preliminary ink study on paper of his "The Weaker Sex" illustration. The hair is done in characteristic fashion but the inking is more simplistic, and the magnifying glass is not as finely detailed as in the final work, which in the final version has a fourth woman in the upper right hand corner. His signature (Charles Gibson) is visible in the shadow area beneath the arm of the woman holding the magnifying glass. On the back of the drawing No. 84 and Mrs (or Miss) Drew is written in pencil. Besides the fact that he apparently was working out the details of the shadows under the arm, he most likely deliberately drew lines over the signature as this piece does not have the perfection of his finished work. The paper is a slightly heavy thickness of sketch pad paper; it is framed in a black-painted wood frame with gilding (minor paint spots and a couple of dings to the frame). Some notes on condition: there are some creases, a tear in the upper left, a few scratches to the paper surface, some brown foxing and some spotting and a water stain on the right hand side. A rarity and an interesting example of a great work in progress. This item is in very good original condition with the condition issued noted above. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Securely packed surface shipping to the continental U.S. is $35 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.

A lovely pair of oil on panel paintings c1900 by Charles MacDonald Manly (Canadian, 1855-1924) ARCA, OSA. Born in England, he came to Canada at an early age. He returned to Europe to study at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin (1881-84). On his return to Canada, he became a founding member of the Toronto Arts Students League. He was an active member of the ARCA (Royal Canadian Academy of Art) and the OSA (Ontario Society of Artists, president in 1903). Highly regarded as a teacher, illustrator, painter and engraver, his works are in the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada and the Dominion Gallery in Montreal, among others. Chiefly known for his watercolours, he was an able painter in both oil and watercolour as well as an accomplished pen and ink illustrator; he also did lithographs and pastels. These paintings were done around 1900 (and framed in the 1960s-70s). The water rapids scene is untitled (sight size 8" x 5-1/2", frame 13-1/2" x 11") and the other is titled "On the Don" (sight size 8" x 5-5/8", frame size 13" x 10-3/4"). The inscription on the back describes the Don River in Toronto, and the ink inscription also says "By C.M. Manly, A.R.C.A. F.H. Brigden executa" (Frederick Brigden was a friend and fellow member of the TASL and OSA, with whom Manly went on sketching trips in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes from 1894-1906, so presumably Frederick Brigden did the preliminary sketch for that painting). Both paintings are signed on the front C.M.M. These works of art are in excellent original condition with no craquelure, tears, soiling, fading, frame damage, losses, damage or repairs. A Chinese export silver 3 piece cruet set with spiders and lizards. This truly unusual and well-made three piece cruet set is in high grade Chinese export silver. Dating to the late 19th-early 20th century, this condiment set has the 2-1/2" high pepper shaker, the 1-1/4" high open salt dish and the 2-1/4" high lidded mustard pot with handle. What makes this set exceptional is the presence of very high relief applied spiders being chased by lizards. The mouths are open on the lizards and the detail is stunning; each piece is on three insect-like legs. Each piece has Chinese silver marks, not a mark I have seen before - but given the unusual use of lizards and bugs, this piece had the look of work by Chinese silversmith Luen Hing. I have not seen this mark attached to any of his known work, so this is merely a speculative opinion. The 3 pc set weighs a total of 115.9 grams, and there is no liner present in the salt dish. This set is in excellent vintage condition with no bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than some indenting to two feet on each of the interiors of the mustard and salt pieces, and slight denting on bugs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. A superb and vintage Art Nouveau 12-3/4" across Austro-Hungarian ceramic wall plaque depicting a lovely woman with an earring and flowers in her hair c1905. This terracotta plaque is probably by Ernst Wahliss, and it has an impressed flying dove stamp with a pattern number 1518. It also has a pencil notation 5620/23, which was typical. Some Wahliss items had a foil tag which often became lost. It has a brown border, a black ground and an ivory coloured face with brownish hair. This item is in excellent condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than a few slight flakes to the brown border and a fine scratch along her chin. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use.
