A genuine Qing period Chinese 18th century oxblood glazed china bulbous vase. This 9-1/8" vase features the lovely brownish red oxblood glaze with a greyish white body. It has the the not unexpected heavy glaze pooling at the base, which shows much frit and expected wear. It has allover crazing and the surface of the glaze has fine overall pinpoint pitting from firing as well. It is unmarked and it is in very good condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than a small area on the lip where there is a dullness and small depression, likely from the grinding down of a small shallow chip in the past (the rim glaze is two thirds intact). The claze at the stom shows some chipping also, but this may date back to the manufacture, or not (it is not recent). A Meiji period Japanese natural paper, bamboo and iron hanging Chōchin lantern in its original wood box. It consists of the ebonized hand-cut and bentwood hanger which has iron fittings with handcut nails. It opens around a pinion for mounting. The 8-3/4" diameter lantern is formed from handmade paper fiber and it has a bentwood collar and base with iron fittings. The top fitting has a handle for hanging and the bottom has fittings for hanging depending on the location. The loop is for securing to the hanger, and the interior of the base has a chain also for hanging and a spike for securing a candle. It has the circled feathers Kamon (also called Mon, or a Japanese family crest) painted in black on the paper as well as Japanese letters. The 12" x 5-3/4" box stands 11-1/4" high and it is darkly stained and also has the mon (family symbol) on the front. The lid has a carved carapace, and it is assembled with handmade finishing nails as well. The work and carving are simple and beautiful, and this lantern is a definite prize, especially since it has survived in such good condition and it has the original fittings and box (which has a taped business card with a note in Japanese in the lid). We have owned just a few of the vintage smaller individual lanterns of this type that are usually carried by a person - this type of Chōchin lantern usually hands from a structure. We have never run across an antique example like this with the box. This lamp is in excellent original condition with the expected signs of age, including slight rubbing on the box edges, some minor splits to the old paper and some minor losses or chipping to the Japanned finish on the hanger. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Expedited tracked insured shipping to the U.S. starts at $34 (other spots may vary, xpresspost is higher) - tracking and insurance are included in shipping quotes. $429.00
A truly unusual and well-made three piece cruet set in high grade Chinese export silver. Dating to the late 19th-early 20th century, this cruet has the 2-1/2" high pepper shaker, the 1-1/4" high open salt dish and the 2-1/4" high lidded mustard pot with handle. What makes this set exceptional is the presence of very high relief applied spiders being chased by lizards. The mouths are open on the lizards and the detail is stunning; each piece is on three insect-like legs. Each piece has Chinese silver marks, not a mark I have seen before - but given the unusual use of lizards and bugs, this piece had the look of work by Chinese silversmith Luen Hing. I have not seen this mark attached to any of his known work, so this is merely speculative opinion. The set weighs a total of 115.9 grams, and there is no liner present in the salt dish. This set is in excellent vintage condition with no bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than some indenting to two feet on each of the interiors of the mustard and salt pieces, and slight denting on bugs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. A rare and unusual japanese oil lamp lamplighter`s kit which dates to the 19th century or earlier. This wonderful and old set is in a gold-trimmed and black lacquer over wood 8-1/2" x 4-1/2 inch box, which stands 6-1/4" inches high. There is gold trim inside as well as on the underside of the lid, with some minor wear and loss, and there is a bruised corner on the upper base.
