This Vincenzo Loria (Salerno, Italy 1849-1939) 23" x 12" unframed watercolour on (cardstock) board depicts a Neapolitan fishing boat on the water. An excellent painting for its play of light and detail, it is signed V. LORIA NAPOLI in the lower left corner. An American Federal period portrait miniature of a lady circa 1800. This well painted antique miniature painting on ivory measures 2-5/8" x 2-1/8" is under a glass cover. The portrait features a woman with draped headdress and white dress. She is extremely well painted, and the case is leather over wood with a brass clasp. A Franck L. Paris France oil on panel painting dated 1969. An excellent example of 1960s French Modernism, this painting is by the renowned painter Franck.L. and is an early work by this respected artist who is still producing. Born in 1944, he started exhibiting in 1966 and his works have been shown at the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris. This work is an untitled still life and it was purchased for a London, Ontario home in 1969. It comes with a contemporary linen-bordered 25 x 19" gilt wood frame and the sight size is 20-1/2 x 14-1/2". It is in good condition with a few areas of craquelure with some scattered areas of lost small paint flakes and a diagonal crease with paint loss near the left hand margin however the thinly applied paint wash also has areas showing small areas of plain panel as well which appear to be integral to the original artist's intent. We are selling it in unrestored condition as it was found in the home. A Charles Dana Gibson THE WEAKER SEX ink sketch study. We are proud to offer this original preliminary ink sketch by the famed American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the Gibson Girl. He first came to eminence as the foremost magazine illustrator of his time in the late 19th century, later in life he turned completely to painting. His long and illustrious career takes more room than alloted here to discuss, and is well covered elsewhere on the Internet. This item is a 22" x 15-1/2" preliminary ink study on paper of his "The Weaker Sex" illustration. The hair is done in characteristic fashion but the inking is more simplistic, and the magnifying glass is not as finely detailed as in the final work, which in the final version has a fourth woman in the upper right hand corner. His signature (Charles Gibson) is visible in the shadow area beneath the arm of the woman holding the magnifying glass. On the back of the drawing No. 84 and Mrs (or Miss) Drew is written in pencil. Besides the fact that he apparently was working out the details of the shadows under the arm, he most likely deliberately drew lines over the signature as this piece does not have the perfection of his finished work. The paper is a slightly heavy thickness of sketch pad paper; it is framed in a black-painted wood frame with gilding (minor paint spots and a couple of dings to the frame). Some notes on condition: there are some creases, a tear in the upper left, a few scratches to the paper surface, some brown foxing and some spotting and a water stain on the right hand side. A rarity and an interesting example of a great work in progress. This item is in very good original condition with the condition issued noted above. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Securely packed surface shipping to the continental U.S. is $35 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.

A lovely pair of oil on panel paintings c1900 by Charles MacDonald Manly (Canadian, 1855-1924) ARCA, OSA. Born in England, he came to Canada at an early age. He returned to Europe to study at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin (1881-84). On his return to Canada, he became a founding member of the Toronto Arts Students League. He was an active member of the ARCA (Royal Canadian Academy of Art) and the OSA (Ontario Society of Artists, president in 1903). Highly regarded as a teacher, illustrator, painter and engraver, his works are in the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada and the Dominion Gallery in Montreal, among others. Chiefly known for his watercolours, he was an able painter in both oil and watercolour as well as an accomplished pen and ink illustrator; he also did lithographs and pastels. These paintings were done around 1900 (and framed in the 1960s-70s). The water rapids scene is untitled (sight size 8" x 5-1/2", frame 13-1/2" x 11") and the other is titled "On the Don" (sight size 8" x 5-5/8", frame size 13" x 10-3/4"). The inscription on the back describes the Don River in Toronto, and the ink inscription also says "By C.M. Manly, A.R.C.A. F.H. Brigden executa" (Frederick Brigden was a friend and fellow member of the TASL and OSA, with whom Manly went on sketching trips in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes from 1894-1906, so presumably Frederick Brigden did the preliminary sketch for that painting). Both paintings are signed on the front C.M.M. These works of art are in excellent original condition with no craquelure, tears, soiling, fading, frame damage, losses, damage or repairs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted. Surface tracked shipping to the continental U.S. is $27 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT accept PayPal.

A William Armstrong RCA (1822-1914, Toronto Canada) watercolour painting of a masted sailing ship in low tide, dated 1892. Born in Dublin Ireland and trained as an engineer and draughtsman, he immigrated to Canada in 1851. His firm produced what is believed to be the first full panoramic photographic view of Toronto in 1857. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. His work is represented in important collections and galleries. His Western paintings particularly are quite famous. This example appears to be tall bluffs with buildings and a beached sailing vessel. Sight size is 10" x 6-1/4" and it is loosely matted in a later 15-1/4 x 12-3/4" painted wood frame. It is signed ARMSTRONG 92 in the lower right and this artwork is in excellent condition with no tears, apparent fading, losses, damage or repairs other than a small surface deposit of some sort on the surface of the paper to the right of the mast (we haven't tried to remove it) and browning to the paper. Xpresspost within Canada starts at $62. Please inquire for rates outside Canada, as additional insurance is required. Glass will be removed before packing. Condition issues are noted; items are vintage or antique and have signs of age/use. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT accept PayPal, only VISA and MASTERCARD. Canadian residents can also pay by Interac E-transfer.

Entitled "The Patrol's Return" on a mounted plaque on the 31-1/2" x 24" wood and plaster frame, this painting is signed CHAS CATTERMOLE on the lower right. The back has a Toronto gallery label from 1949 and the canvas is numbered 908 on the back. The image is clean with full colours and a glossy surface (and was most likely cleaned and revarnished in the not too distant past), and it is in excellent condition with no losses or damage to the canvas however there is moderate but noticeable plaster loss to the frame. An important Canadian Group of 7 oil on panel by Francis Hans - Franz or Frank - Johnston OSA, ARCA (Canadian, 1888-1949) titled "Pools of Spring". Born in Toronto, he was a founding member of the renowned Toronto painters known as the Group of Seven, which he left by 1926. He became a principal of the Winnipeg School of Art and later the Ontario College of Art. He changed his signature to "Franz" in 1927 on the advice of a friend. He was the most productive and financially successful of the Group of Seven, painting steadily until he suffered a stroke in 1948. His work shows his love of the Canadian landscape and his fascination with light. His highly sought after works are on exhibition in the McMaster Collection, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada (General Collection and War Gallery Collection), among others. An exquisite and original Victorian watercolour botanical study in its original mahogany frame c1860-70. This oval section of the painting measures 9" x 7", and it is a watercolour painting of a moss rose. It has a double mat (possibly original), and the 17" x 15" reeded edge frame has the original patterned gilded interior frame and it has the original 19thC glass. It is unsigned but of lovely quality, and the watercolour is in excellent original condition with no rips, scrapes, fading, foxing, stains, losses, damage or repairs other some slight darkening of the paper. There is an irregular look of the finish in each corner of the frame, which most likely was from someone removing some corner decorative pieces to the frame (leaving a slight roughness to the surface at each corner) and some browning to the mat, which has a pale olive green colour unlike our photographs. There is also a long sliver chip to the frame, visible to the left side of the bottom of the frame. Please note the light reflections in the closeup - these are not creases in the paper, but only a reflection of the photography. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. starts at $22 (securely packed, other spots may vary, can be shipped without glass) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. NOTE: we do not accept PayPal.
