An antique 14k opals and diamonds and synthetic ruby ring circa 1900. This classic late Victorian period yellow gold ring is set with two natural round cabochon opals with four antique cut genuine diamonds on each side of a central lab created ruby. This size 7 ring has natural opals with fine green and blue fire and a fiery orange internal color. The genuine diamonds are approximately 2 - 2.5 points each and the central synthetic ruby is 4 mm. across. These rings were often engagement or wedding rings for those who could afford them, diamond-only engagement rings didn't become popular until the 20th century. Synthetic rubies of this period were what we refer to as lab created gems now, they are treated genuine lesser price actual gem stones. The lab treatment gives them the appearance of genuine high price gem stones. White sapphires were and occasionally still are a stone of choice, they wear well also, as sapphires are a 9 on the Mohs stone hardness scale. Cut glass or rhinestone copies of stones are not the same. It measures 5/8" x 3/16" across the setting, the ring is unmarked due to a probable re-hooping in the past. An Edwardian 14k yellow gold sunburst diamond and seed pearls ring circa 1900 1910. This unusual antique ring of genuine seed pearls and a genuine diamond is in the sunburst or starburst shape popular with lavalieres at the time, it was more likely a representation of a daisy or some other flower. The sunburst has 10 petals with genuine seed pearls and it has a central claw-set 8 point (measured by flat stone gauge) genuine antique European cut diamond; the shank is stamped 14K with a JIC maker's mark. I have never seen this ring before in 38 years in antiques. It is possible that this piece was produced at a slightly later date, but the ring shank is an appropriate one for the period, and the setting is properly mounted and appears original. This ring weighs 6.3 grams, and it is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, dents, bends, corrosion, losses or damage other than some glue residue on a couple of reset pearls (an old repair, and is restorable). The pearls have some colour variation, which is not unusual.
