An important Canadian Group of 7 oil on panel by Francis Hans - Franz or Frank - Johnston OSA, ARCA (Canadian, 1888-1949) titled "Pools of Spring". Born in Toronto, he was a founding member of the renowned Toronto painters known as the Group of Seven, which he left by 1926. An impressive Neoclassic English sterling silver centerpiece basket, fully hallmarked for Sheffeld 1910. Made by the firm James Dixon & Sons, this basket is a prime example of quality Edwardian silver done in the revivial of design from a century earlier. It has gadrooned edges, scroll and leaf edge terminals, and berried wreath designs. This 16-3/4" x 11" beauty weighs an impressive 1010 grams (approximately 32.5 troy ounces) of sterling silver. It was presented as an award, and it has the following inscription at the center of the bowl: PRESENTED TO W.T. GENT, Esqre. J.P., IN RECOGNITION OF 30 YEARS SERVICE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL OF MISTERTON 11th MARCH 1925." Mr. Gent was the Justice of the Peace of the small town and rural area of Misterton, Nottinghamshire, England, and the inscription also has the names of other council members. This basket is solidly made and heavy, and it was actually plated with sterling over the original parcel gilding (polishing has revealed gilding under polished silver areas, rather than vice-versa). As this basket was bought on the secondhand market for presentation some 15 years after its manufacture, the purchasers opted to silver over the existing gilding, which was considered somewhat ostentatious and contrary to the British taste of the day. Some of the gilding is visible on the ribbon openwork, on the upper section of the base, and on the inscription area. Further polishing will reveal the intact gilding under the thin sterling plating done probably at the time of presentation. This wonderful survivor is in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than the areas of exposed gilding. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. A William Armstrong RCA (1822-1914, Toronto Canada) watercolour painting of a masted sailing ship in low tide, dated 1892. Born in Dublin Ireland and trained as an engineer and draughtsman, he immigrated to Canada in 1851. His firm produced what is believed to be the first full panoramic photographic view of Toronto in 1857. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This example appears to be tall bluffs with buildings and a beached sailing vessel. Sight size is 10" x 6-1/4" and it is loosely matted in a later 15-1/4 x 12-3/4" painted wood frame. It is signed ARMSTRONG 92 in the lower right and this artwork is in excellent condition with no tears, apparent fading, losses, damage or repairs other than a small surface deposit of some sort on the surface of the paper to the right of the mast (we haven't tried to remove it) and browning to the paper. A late 18thC Qing Dynasty Canton enamel bowl. This high quality bowl has original gilding and it dates to circa 1770 - 1800. This lobed quatrefoil shaped bowl measures 7-3/4" x 6-1/4" and it is 3-1/8" in height. The enamelling is particularly fine, done to the Chinese taste. The rim of the bowl retains much of its original gilding. The interior is a pale blue enamel, the bottom is speckled white. The upper rim has a Greek key design border. While it doesn't appear to have been much used other than decoratively, this bowl was likely made to be a jardiniere, and may have been used as that previously. It is in excellent condition for its age, with no corrosion, apparent losses, damage or repairs other than a slight touch of wear to the gilding on the edges and some minor discolouration spots to the interior enamel. Condition issues as mentioned. All items are vintage or antique so some indications of use should be expected. Shipping is by XpressPost or Fedex. A pair of mid-19thC ornate Meissen style covered urns. This amazing and massive pair of mid-19th century French porcelain 19" covered mantle urns were made by M.S. Claus, France. They are fully hand painted and in the Meissen style, and both are extravagantly festooned with hand-formed and applied flowers and leaves. Each is topped with a similarly decorated lid, topped with a figure of a child. The colours are bright and vivid and they have the crossed swords mark for Claus and a 1777 pattern number. Each has had some restoration - the child with the umbrella finial has a repaired and repainted base and the lid has a large firing crack (on the interior edge and not visible when on display). It also has some gold wear to the lid's rim, and the base has a large area of restoration and painting to the upper rim and a firing crack to the outer shoulder. The other urn's lid has a similar interior firing crack, and the base has a similar repair to its rim as well (which also has a crack on the repaired area). Each urn has some minor expected chipping and losses to the flowers, and this pair is in very good/reasonable condition with a good appearance, and they could be completely restored if desired. A 14K Australian black opal ring circa 1960s with intense color. This vintage opal is a genuine opal gem stone, most likely from the Andamooka area in Australia. It has been sugared (treated with sugar and acid) to deepen the colour. Andamooka opals can be great quality, but treating them to intensify the color has been done for many years. The setting is an abstract modern design in 14 K yellow gold, custom made for the opal. It is a size 7-3/4 or 7.75 and the opal is a cabochon opal measuring 24mm x 12mm x 4.4mm - approximately 7 carats in size. It has a fantastic colour play including intense red, green, blue, gold, orange and purple. Our pictures don't do this stone justice, and the view of the ring on a hand shows the intensity of the colours. It is stamped 14 K and this is a genuine opal all through, not a doublet. It comes with a recent independent professional gemological appraisal for $3500 CAD which does mention the sugar enhancement, so it is factored into the value given. The ring weighs 7.3 gr. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs. The stone does have some minor crazing, as mentioned in the appraisal. All condition issues are noted. All items are vintage or antique and may have signs of use and patination as would be expected. GUARANTEE: ALL of our items are antique or vintage and from the period listed. Courier post to the US starts at $110 (other spots may vary, air is higher).
