An important Canadian Group of 7 oil on panel by Francis Hans - Franz or Frank - Johnston OSA, ARCA (Canadian, 1888-1949) titled "Pools of Spring". Born in Toronto, he was a founding member of the renowned Toronto painters known as the Group of Seven, which he left by 1926. He became a principal of the Winnipeg School of Art and later the Ontario College of Art. He changed his signature to "Franz" in 1927 on the advice of a friend. He was the most productive and financially successful of the Group of Seven, painting steadily until he suffered a stroke in 1948. His work shows his love of the Canadian landscape and his fascination with light. His highly sought after works are on exhibition in the McMaster Collection, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada (General Collection and War Gallery Collection), among others. This painting has a sight size of 24" x 20" and the original painted frame, which measures 31" x 26-3/4". This painting has an inscription on the back saying "POOLS of SPRING Source of the Oroman Early April by Franz Johnston A.R.C.A." and this work of art has also been authenticated in writing by a leading Toronto fine arts auction house. A massive Neoclassic English sterling silver centerpiece basket, fully hallmarked for Sheffeld 1910. Made by the firm James Dixon & Sons, this basket is a prime example of quality Edwardian silver done in the revivial of design from a century earlier. It has gadrooned edges, scroll and leaf edge terminals, and berried wreath designs. This 16-3/4" x 11" beauty weighs an impressive 1010 grams (approximately 32.5 troy ounces) of sterling silver. It was presented as an award, and it has the following inscription at the center of the bowl: PRESENTED TO W.T. GENT, Esqre. J.P., IN RECOGNITION OF 30 YEARS SERVICE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL OF MISTERTON 11th MARCH 1925." Mr. Gent was the Justice of the Peace of the small town and rural area of Misterton, Nottinghamshire, England, and the inscription also has the names of other council members. This basket is solidly made and heavy, and it was actually plated with sterling over the original parcel gilding (polishing has revealed gilding under polished silver areas, rather than vice-versa). As this basket was bought on the secondhand market for presentation some 15 years after its manufacture, the purchasers opted to silver over the existing gilding, which was considered somewhat ostentatious and contrary to the British taste of the day. Some of the gilding is visible on the ribbon openwork, on the upper section of the base, and on the inscription area. Further polishing will reveal the intact gilding under the thin sterling plating done probably at the time of presentation. This wonderful survivor is in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than the areas of exposed gilding. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. Shipping is by express tracked and insurable post. This may limit shipping to some destinations. tracked and insurable post. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. A late 18thC Qing Dynasty Canton enamel bowl. This high quality bowl has original gilding and it dates to circa 1770 - 1800. This lobed quatrefoil shaped bowl measures 7-3/4" x 6-1/4" and it is 3-1/8" in height. The enamelling is particularly fine, done to the Chinese taste. The rim of the bowl retains much of its original gilding. The interior is a pale blue enamel, the bottom is speckled white. The upper rim has a Greek key design border. While it doesn't appear to have been much used other than decoratively, this bowl was likely made to be a jardiniere, and may have been used as that previously. It is in excellent condition for its age, with no corrosion, apparent losses, damage or repairs other than a slight touch of wear to the gilding on the edges and some minor discolouration spots to the interior enamel. Condition issues as mentioned. All items are vintage or antique so some indications of use should be expected. Shipping is by XpressPost or Fedex. A pair of mid-19thC ornate Meissen style covered urns. This amazing and massive pair of mid-19th century French porcelain 19" covered mantle urns were made by M.S. Claus, France. Each is topped with a similarly decorated lid, topped with a figure of a child. The colours are bright and vivid and they have the crossed swords mark for Claus and a 1777 pattern number. Each has had some restoration - the child with the umbrella finial has a repaired and repainted base and the lid has a large firing crack (on the interior edge and not visible when on display). A lovely pair of oil on panel paintings c1900 by Charles MacDonald Manly (Canadian, 1855-1924) ARCA, OSA. Born in England, he came to Canada at an early age. He returned to Europe to study at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin (1881-84). On his return to Canada, he became a founding member of the Toronto Arts Students League. He was an active member of the ARCA (Royal Canadian Academy of Art) and the OSA (Ontario Society of Artists, president in 1903). Highly regarded as a teacher, illustrator, painter and engraver, his works are in the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada and the Dominion Gallery in Montreal, among others. Chiefly known for his watercolours, he was an able painter in both oil and watercolour as well as an accomplished pen and ink illustrator; he also did lithographs and pastels. These paintings were done around 1900 (and framed in the 1960s-70s). The water rapids scene is untitled (sight size 8" x 5-1/2", frame 13-1/2" x 11") and the other is titled "On the Don" (sight size 8" x 5-5/8", frame size 13" x 10-3/4"). The inscription on the back describes the Don River in Toronto, and the ink inscription also says "By C.M. Manly, A.R.C.A. F.H. Brigden executa" (Frederick Brigden was a friend and fellow member of the TASL and OSA, with whom Manly went on sketching trips in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes from 1894-1906, so presumably Frederick Brigden did the preliminary sketch for that painting). Both paintings are signed on the front C.M.M. These works of art are in excellent original condition with no craquelure, tears, soiling, fading, frame damage, losses, damage or repairs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted. Surface tracked shipping to the continental U.S. is $27 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. A pair of early Staffordshire figurines of eagles on vermicular or marble painted bases from 1820-1850. These well modelled heavily gilded 19thC English earthenware eagles are 7-3/4" tall. Both have tilted heads and back-stretched wings. They have purple, yellow and orange marble-like painting on the simple rectangular shape bases. The mustard yellow rocky perches have a blue flower. They not signed with a manufacturer's stamp, unfortunately fairly common with Staffordshire figures. They are in very good, but not undamaged condition. One is undamaged with only a firing crack, which is original to the manufacture of the figurines (see image), and the other has had the lower portion of one wing and the head re-glued. Some wear to the gilding. The breaks and repair are quite clean and it could be restored professionally. The only pair of Staffordshire eagles I have owned in over 40 years selling antiques. The firing crack is very small with only small expected disturbances (including slight browning to the beak of one eagle) which don't detract from the appeal of these unusual figurines. They are in very good as-described condition with otherwise no damage or repairs other than mentioned. Shipping is by FedEx to the US (please ask for a quote) or $35.00 within Canada.

A Charles Dana Gibson THE WEAKER SEX ink sketch study. We are proud to offer this original preliminary ink sketch by the famed American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the Gibson Girl. He first came to eminence as the foremost magazine illustrator of his time in the late 19th century, later in life he turned completely to painting. His long and illustrious career takes more room than alloted here to discuss, and is well covered elsewhere on the Internet. This item is a 22" x 15-1/2" preliminary ink study on paper of his "The Weaker Sex" illustration. The hair is done in characteristic fashion but the inking is more simplistic, and the magnifying glass is not as finely detailed as in the final work, which in the final version has a fourth woman in the upper right hand corner. His signature (Charles Gibson) is visible in the shadow area beneath the arm of the woman holding the magnifying glass. On the back of the drawing No. 84 and Mrs (or Miss) Drew is written in pencil. Besides the fact that he apparently was working out the details of the shadows under the arm, he most likely deliberately drew lines over the signature as this piece does not have the perfection of his finished work. The paper is a slightly heavy thickness of sketch pad paper; it is framed in a black-painted wood frame with gilding (minor paint spots and a couple of dings to the frame). Some notes on condition: there are some creases, a tear in the upper left, a few scratches to the paper surface, some brown foxing and some spotting and a water stain on the right hand side. A rarity and an interesting example of a great work in progress. This item is in very good original condition with the condition issued noted above. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Securely packed surface shipping to the continental U.S. is $35 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. A superb and top quality example of Austro-Hungarian glassmaking at its finest. This is a set of six shell shaped cranberry glass nut dishes c1900 with crisp molding and lush encrusted gold decoration. Attributed to Moser, this set is certainly of the expected quality but we can't definitively confirm this. The set consists of the deep 9-1/2" long and 7-1/8" wide master nut bowl as well as five matching 4-1/2" long and 3-3/8" wide individual nut bowls. The allover hand applied gold decoration is superb and it appears on the outer surfaces as well as on the interior. We have seen only a couple of examples of the smaller dishes only, never the full size master nut dish, and seldom in cranberry and rarely with such ornate decoration. A true prize for any serious collection of Moser or European art glass. This unsigned set appears unused, even after 110 years, and it is in stellar original condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than a 1/16" across flake to the edge of one of the individual dish's edges and the expected minor irregularities expected on hand-painted and hand-finished art glass. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use.
