| A pair of antique engravings by English artist and social satirist William Hogarth (1697-1764) and engraved by Thomas Cook c1798. Struck after William Hogarth's death, these engravings were the third of three versions of the Before and After series, produced around 1736. BEFORE, the first engraving, has within the engraving a book in a drawer titled The Practice of Piety and a book by the Duke Of Rochester, one of several commentaries by Hogarth included in the work. It is marked DESIGNED BY Wm. HOGARTH ENGRAVED BY T. COOK PUBLISHED FEBRUARY THE 1st 1798 BY G.G.& J. ROBINSON PATER-NOSTER ROW LONDON. The size of the print is 16-3/4" x 13-1/4" (sight size) and it is in a 18-3/8" x 14-3/4" dark stained wood frame (minor edge scrapes and holes from earlier hanging). The second is AFTER and contains, in the print itself, Aristotle's aphorism " OMNE ANIMAL POST COITUM TRISTE - ARISTOTLE " on a sheaf of papers on the floor, just one of several commentaries by Hogarth included in the scene. It is marked DESIGNED BY Wm. HOGARTH ENGRAVED BY T. COOK PUBLISHED BY G.G. & J. ROBINSONS PATER-NOSTER ROW OCTOBER 1st, 1798. The size of the print is 16-3/4" x 13-1/4" (sight size) and it is in a 18-3/8" x 14-1/4" dark-stained wood frame (minor edge scrapes and 2 holes from earlier wall mounting). AFTER is in very good original condition with the following condition issues: allover browning of the paper, some spotting or minor staining not adversely affecting the image, some moderate soiling, shallow creasing and spotting to the margins.
