| A stylish Victorian period French jet (black glass) mourning brooch c1880, with a rolled gold plate back and bezel set mounted genuine seed pearls on the front. This 2-1/2" x 1/2" pin closes with a modified c-clasp; the central seed pearl is mounted in a rolled gold plate Maltese cross. French jet is the term to describe the black glass alternative to Whitby jet, whose great demand in the 19th century and subsequent lack of supply even in the 19th century caused the need for this alternative material. This lovely piece of Victorian mourning jewellery is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than a few pin point sized barely visible abrasions on a couple of the edges.
