| This is a original clear and vivid tintype photograph in its fancy early Scovill Union thermoplastic picture case c1855-60. The image is is 1/6 plate size (image size 3-1/4" x 2-3/4") and the case has a wonderful high relief vine and leaf design with a central medallion on both the front and back. It has the original gilt exposed hinges and original interior snap, as well as the finely engraved and tooled gold coloured picture surround. It has the original paper insert printed with GENUINE UNION CASE, IMPROVED. FINE GILT AND BURNISHED HINGE. SCOVILL MF'G Co. The cases are sometimes described as gutta percha cases, but Union cases were always a composition material and never gutta percha. The image is of a well dressed and seated rather stern countenanced young gentleman, and the image is crisp, clean and vivid with no staining, fading or any other fault. The dust flecks are under the glass and can be brushed away if you wish to unwrap the image from its metal surround. The 3-3/4" x 3-3/8" case is in exceptionally fine original condition with no damage, cracks, discolouration or fading except for two tiny chips at the edge; the hinges are excellent shape also, and it closes properly. There is no velvet decorative facing with this case. An attractive historical piece in exemplary condition. Surface shipping is $5 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher.
