A true rarity in exemplary condition. This is an early 20th century 9" x 10-1/2" x 3-1/2" (folded, 13" with bellows extended) mahogany and brass large format dry plate camera with lens c1920. This early piece of photographic equipment has well-made brass fittings and adjustment screws, the original leather carrying strap (minor scuffing and cracking but still intact), the original red leather bellows and a fine quality Schneider lens. The backing plate is removable as is the lens assembly, with the face of the camera with the lens able to be adjusted by height. The screwback removable lens is a Xenar f:5.6 19.5 cm manual iris model, made by Jos. Schneider & Co. Kreuznach, with the serial number 93315 (date of manufacture c1924, introduced 1919). It has an added cardboard iris gauge, and this camera is missing only the lens cap and the tripod and backing mount. The bellows are pliant with no tears and the lens appears clear. The camera overall appears to be in excellent, near mint, gently used condition. We haven't found any information on the SOM company or camera model, but this is a high quality unit from the early years of the last century (it even has indicator gauges on the brass pivots). This item is in excellent original condition with no losses, damage or repairs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. starts at $16 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. NOTE: we do not accept PayPal.

A scarce, very early photograph of a motorcyle, sidecar and riders c1905. On a late tintype (photo on treated metal blank), this 2-3/8 x 1-5/8" (view area) image consists of a young motorcycle rider astride the bike with a rather concerned-looking grandma in the sidecar. Three other ladies stand behind her, and there is an Edmonson's Red Seal Toffee pail in the middle of the road (road hazards were a little different in those days...). It comes papered into its original cardboard mount, and this image has "GRAMMA HEMO (?), BILL DORIS LEAVING FOR CANADA" in pencil on the back. It is in very good original condition with no cracks, crazing, scrapes, bends, corrosion, damage or repairs other than some light fogging or silvering on the right side of the image. A must for the motorcycle or transportation image collector. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Uninsured surface shipping starts at $5 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $100 if paid with a credit card; credit card items will be shipped to confirmed billing addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.

This is a original clear and vivid tintype photograph in its fancy early Scovill Union thermoplastic picture case c1855-60. The image is is 1/6 plate size (image size 3-1/4" x 2-3/4") and the case has a wonderful high relief vine and leaf design with a central medallion on both the front and back. It has the original gilt exposed hinges and original interior snap, as well as the finely engraved and tooled gold coloured picture surround. It has the original paper insert printed with GENUINE UNION CASE, IMPROVED. FINE GILT AND BURNISHED HINGE. SCOVILL MF'G Co. The cases are sometimes described as gutta percha cases, but Union cases were always a composition material and never gutta percha. The image is of a well dressed and seated rather stern countenanced young gentleman, and the image is crisp, clean and vivid with no staining, fading or any other fault. The dust flecks are under the glass and can be brushed away if you wish to unwrap the image from its metal surround. The 3-3/4" x 3-3/8" case is in exceptionally fine original condition with no damage, cracks, discolouration or fading except for two tiny chips at the edge; the hinges are excellent shape also, and it closes properly. There is no velvet decorative facing with this case. An attractive historical piece in exemplary condition. Surface shipping is $5 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.
