An unframed oil on canvas painting depicting a fence and trees on a hillock with a mountain background by Eva Brook Donly (Canada 1867-1941). Born in Simcoe, Ontario, she studied under Frederick M. Bell-Smith at Alma College and the School for Artisans New York under John Ward Stimson. She also studied at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City under Jose M. Pino. Works by this listed artist (Dictionary of Canadian Artists) are on display at the Eva Brook Donly Museum in Simcoe and in the National Gallery of Canada. This painting measures 20" x 16", and it is unsigned and it was discovered in a storage closet with other paintings. It has a pencil notation on the back (illegible), it has signs of being framed at one time and it is in excellent original condition with no tears, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than some slight darkening from grime/fireplace ash. Hold

An exquisite and original Victorian watercolour botanical study in its original mahogany frame c1860-70. This oval section of the painting measures 9" x 7", and it is a watercolour painting of a moss rose. It has a double mat (possibly original), and the 17" x 15" reeded edge frame has the original patterned gilded interior frame and it has the original 19thC glass. It is unsigned but of lovely quality, and the watercolour is in excellent original condition with no rips, scrapes, fading, foxing, stains, losses, damage or repairs other some slight darkening of the paper. There is an irregular look of the finish in each corner of the frame, which most likely was from someone removing some corner decorative pieces to the frame (leaving a slight roughness to the surface at each corner) and some browning to the mat, which has a pale olive green colour unlike our photographs. There is also a long sliver chip to the frame, visible to the left side of the bottom of the frame. Please note the light reflections in the closeup - these are not creases in the paper, but only a reflection of the photography. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. starts at $22 (securely packed, other spots may vary, can be shipped without glass) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. NOTE: we do not accept PayPal.

$27900

An important Canadian Group of Seven oil on panel by Francis Hans (Franz or Frank) Johnston OSA, ARCA (Canadian, 1888-1949) titled "Pools of Spring". Born in Toronto, he was a founding member of the renowned Group of Seven, which he left by 1926. He became a principal of the Winnipeg School of Art and later the Ontario College of Art. He changed his signature to "Franz" in 1927 on the advice of a friend. He was the most productive and financially successful of the Group of Seven, painting steadily until he suffered a stroke in 1948. His work shows his love of the Canadian landscape and his fascination with light. His highly sought after works are on exhibition in the McMaster Collection, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada (General Collection and War Gallery Collection), among others. This painting has a sight size of 24" x 20" and the original painted frame, which measures 31" x 26-3/4". This painting has an inscription on the back saying "POOLS of SPRING Source of the Oroman Early April by Franz Johnston A.R.C.A." and this work of art has also been authenticated in writing by a leading Toronto fine arts auction house. It is in excellent original condition with no craquelure, rips, soiling, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than a few tiny flecks to the gilt surface of the frame. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted. Shipping and insurance will be arranged with the purchaser. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.

$95

A late Victorian period unsigned framed watercolour on paper of a young child c1860-80. This piece of early memorial folk art was possibly made by a family member as a reminder of a deceased child, with typical muted colours and austere pose. This Victorian picture is a lovingly made piece, most likely a memorial painting, with a hand-cut deep red velvet mat, a gilt paper mount from a photo-album page and a black and gilt frame with applied brass Coptic crosses in each corner. The image alone measures 5-1/2" x 4" (sight size), the frame is 14" x 12", and it has a unique back closure - a cut wood ruler screwed to the frame with brass screws (later addition, and removable). It retains its original black backing paper and glass, and this unsigned piece of Victorian folk art is in excellent vintage condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs except for some minor finish chipping at the frames ends. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Tracked insured surface shipping (securely packaged) to the U.S. starts at $23 (other spots may vary) - insurance/tracking included. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT ACCEPT Paypal.

$395

A lovely early 20th century scenic watercolour painting by the listed British artist Edwin St. John (1878-1961). This painting measures 20-3/4" x 14-1/4" and it depicts a wonderful panoramic hillside view overlooking Lake Lugano in Italy with a town in the background ("Scene of Lake Lugano" hand written in pencil on back). Mountains rise up on the horizon under a partly cloudy sky, and the detail, lighting and composition are all top-notch, with vivid colours in front and atmospheric detail as the distance recedes. This painting is being sold unmatted and unframed; it is currently on foam-core with temporary mounts and it will be properly and securely packed for shipping. This item is in very good original condition with no scrapes, tears, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than the following: there is some soiling/foxing to the white clouds, there are a couple of shallow paper blisters near the top (shown sidelit in the last image) and a very slight touch of rubbing and a small corner bump along the lower edge from a previous mat. A beautiful painting ready for conservation and framing. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping starts at $22 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card; credit card items will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. $125 pair

A beautifully painted pair of framed watercolour photo renderings c1880-1900. They consist of a young man and woman in mid-Victorian dress; each image is done on Victorian photographic print paper and they measure 6-3/4" x 4-3/4". It was common to overpaint old and fading photographs, however these are of such fine quality and detail that they were most likely done from a mirrored projection, another common method of photographic rendering (we can't find any photographic detail under the painting with visual magnification). Each has the legend J. POWELL PHOTO on the image (even the J Powell is over-painted). The frames are an attractive matched pair of gilt painted wood, but are fairly recent in manufacture - the pictures were framed and matted less than 20 years ago. The couple is quite handsome, and they can be your new instant ancestors.... This pair of watercolour portraits is in very good original condition with no losses, damage or repairs other than a faint water stain and a couple of fox marks on the lady and some spots of missing colour on the gentleman (possibly from removal from some old glass to which the photo/picture had adhered). Each has been recently reframed and matted, and the spots on the man could be restored. Surface shipping starts at $24 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insurance and tracking included in shipping quotes. We do ship internationally. PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT accept Paypal.
