An antique pair of early 19th century paintings on ivory c1830-40. They are watercolour on ivory, and the detail and costumes are quite good - their painting style is detailed but a little simplistic - probably a talented amateur or folk artist painter rather than a trained portrait artist. They come in the original gesso and gilt over wood frames. The ivories themselves measure 2-5/8" x 2" and the frames measure 4-1/8" x 3-3/4" and 4-3/8 x 3-3/4". They are unsigned, and the frames have remnants of the original gilding along with a myriad of layers of paint from the past, worn or partially stripped away. They were found in Canada but may be either of Canadian or US origin. The people appear to be a father and a young son and the father's painting appears to have the original glass and backing board; the son's glass has a corner crack (reglued) and appears to be more recent. We have shown both back and front of each ivory, with the light shining through on one to show the translucency of the panel. The colours are vivid and bright, and this pair is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, damage or repairs other than a small area on the upper right of the son where the paint has been rubbed and some edge soiling on each picture, as well as the wear or partial stripping of the frames. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping starts at $8 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. All of our prices are in $US. NOTE: we do not accept PayPal.

$95

A late Victorian period unsigned framed watercolour on paper depicting a child. This piece of early memorial folk art was possibly made by a family member as a reminder of a deceased child, with typical muted colours and austere pose. This Victorian memorial picture is a lovingly made piece, with a hand-cut deep red velvet mat, a gilt paper mount from a photo-album page and a black and gilt frame with applied coptic-style crosses in each corner. The image measures 5-1/2" x 4" (sight size), the frame is 14 x 12", and it has a unique back closure - a cut wood ruler screwed to the frame with brass screws (later addition, and removeable). It retains its original black backing paper and glass, and this unsigned piece of Victorian folk art is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, losses, damage or repairs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping (securely packaged) to the continental U.S. starts at $16 (other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US.

$125 pair

A beautifully painted pair of framed watercolour photo renderings c1880-1900. They consist of a young man and woman in mid-Victorian dress; each image is done on Victorian photographic print paper and they measure 6-3/4" x 4-3/4". It was common to overpaint old and fading photographs, however these are of such fine quality and detail that they were most likely done from a mirrored projection, another common method of photographic rendering (we can't find any photographic detail under the painting with visual magnification). Each has the legend J. POWELL PHOTO on the image (even the J Powell is over-painted). The frames are an attractive matched pair of gilt painted wood, but are fairly recent in manufacture - the pictures were framed and matted less than 20 years ago. The couple is quite handsome, and they can be your new instant ancestors.... This pair of watercolour portraits is in very good original condition with no losses, damage or repairs other than a faint water stain and a couple of fox marks on the lady and some spots of missing colour on the gentleman (possibly from removal from some old glass to which the photo/picture had adhered). Each has been recently reframed and matted, and the spots on the man could be restored. Surface shipping starts at $18 (to the US - other spots may vary) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. We do ship internationally.

$195

An exquisite and original Victorian watercolour botanical study in its original mahogany frame c1860-70. This oval section of the painting measures 9" x 7", and it is a watercolour painting of a moss rose. It has a double mat (possibly original), and the 17" x 15" reeded edge frame has the original patterned gilded interior frame and it has the original 19thC glass. It is unsigned but of lovely quality, and the watercolour is in excellent original condition with no rips, scrapes, fading, foxing, stains, losses, damage or repairs other some slight darkening of the paper. There is an irregular look of the finish in each corner of the frame, which most likely was from someone removing some corner decorative pieces to the frame (leaving a slight roughness to the surface at each corner) and some browning to the mat, which has a pale olive green colour unlike our photographs. There is also a long sliver chip to the frame, visible to the left side of the bottom of the frame. Please note the light reflections in the closeup - these are not creases in the paper, but only a reflection of the photography. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are secondhand and may have slight signs of gentle use. Surface shipping to the continental U.S. starts at $22 (securely packed, other spots may vary, can be shipped without glass) - insured is higher, and mandatory on items over $85 if paid with a credit card. Items paid with a credit card will be shipped to confirmed addresses only. We do ship internationally. All of our prices are in $US. NOTE: we do not accept PayPal.

An important Canadian Group of Seven oil on panel by Francis Hans (Franz) Johnston OSA, ARCA (Canadian, 1888-1949) ARCA, OSA, entitled "Pools of Spring". Born in Toronto, he was a founding member of the renowned Group of Seven, which he left by 1926. He became a principal of the Winnipeg School of Art and later the Ontario College of Art.
