A massive Neoclassic English sterling silver centerpiece basket, fully hallmarked for Sheffeld 1910. Made by the firm James Dixon & Sons, this basket is a prime example of quality Edwardian silver done in the revivial of design from a century earlier. It has gadrooned edges, scroll and leaf edge terminals, and berried wreath designs. This 16-3/4" x 11" beauty weighs an impressive 1010 grams (approximately 32.5 troy ounces) of sterling silver. It was presented as an award, and it has the following inscription at the center of the bowl: PRESENTED TO W.T. GENT, Esqre. J.P., IN RECOGNITION OF 30 YEARS SERVICE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL OF MISTERTON 11th MARCH 1925." Mr. Gent was the Justice of the Peace of the small town and rural area of Misterton, Nottinghamshire, England, and the inscription also has the names of other council members. This basket is solidly made and heavy, and it was actually plated with sterling over the original parcel gilding (polishing has revealed gilding under polished silver areas, rather than vice-versa). As this basket was bought on the secondhand market for presentation some 15 years after its manufacture, the purchasers opted to silver over the existing gilding, which was considered somewhat ostentatious and contrary to the British taste of the day. Some of the gilding is visible on the ribbon openwork, on the upper section of the base, and on the inscription area. Further polishing will reveal the intact gilding under the thin sterling plating done probably at the time of presentation. This wonderful survivor is in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than the areas of exposed gilding. This is a classic 8-3/4" x 8-1/2" (top measurement) two-handled heavy brass Chinese censer dating to the late 17th-early 18th century. This censer weighs approximately four kilograms and it has the ornate two character Xuande mark on the bottom, and an interior six character Xuande mark. It is of superb style and quality, and it is in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than the polishing off of most of the original patina, traces of which remains around the three feet and under the handles. A late 18thC Qing Dynasty Canton enamel bowl. This high quality bowl has original gilding and it dates to circa 1770 - 1800. This lobed quatrefoil shaped bowl measures 7-3/4" x 6-1/4" and it is 3-1/8" in height. The enamelling is particularly fine, done to the Chinese taste. The rim of the bowl retains much of its original gilding. The interior is a pale blue enamel, the bottom is speckled white. The upper rim has a Greek key design border. While it doesn't appear to have been much used other than decoratively, this bowl was likely made to be a jardiniere, and may have been used as that previously. It is in excellent condition for its age, with no corrosion, apparent losses, damage or repairs other than a slight touch of wear to the gilding on the edges and some minor discolouration spots to the interior enamel. A pair of mid-19thC ornate Meissen style covered urns. This amazing and massive pair of mid-19th century French porcelain 19" covered mantle urns were made by M.S. Claus, France. They are fully hand painted and in the Meissen style, and both are extravagantly festooned with hand-formed and applied flowers and leaves. Each is topped with a similarly decorated lid, topped with a figure of a child. The colours are bright and vivid and they have the crossed swords mark for Claus and a 1777 pattern number. Each has had some restoration - the child with the umbrella finial has a repaired and repainted base and the lid has a large firing crack (on the interior edge and not visible when on display). It also has some gold wear to the lid's rim, and the base has a large area of restoration and painting to the upper rim and a firing crack to the outer shoulder. The other urn's lid has a similar interior firing crack, and the base has a similar repair to its rim as well (which also has a crack on the repaired area). Each urn has some minor expected chipping and losses to the flowers, and this pair is in very good/reasonable condition with a good appearance, and they could be completely restored if desired. This is a genuine English sterling silver William IV teapot fully hallmarked for London, England 1837. This table serving piece measures 11-1/4" from spout to handle and it has a wonderful bolt-mounted floral finial. It has fine leaf and flower repousse decoration throughout and it stands on four fancy feet. It has the maker's mark for the respected English silversmith firm of Edward, Edward Jr., John and W. Barnard and it weighs an impressive 810 grams. This excellent survivor is in very good condition with no bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than a dent on one panel at the shoulder and some looseness at the insulating spacer at the top of the handle from an old repair (the handle wobbles a little). A set of 4 Chinese Qianlong tea bowls and saucers. These period porcelain blue and white 1-5/8" high cups and 4-5/8" saucers date from 1736-95, and this set has a central scene on the saucers and the outside of the cups, decorated borders, and interior flowers in the cups. All pieces are unmarked, and they are in good condition with no losses, damage or repairs other than a 1/16" rim flake to the glaze on one cup and roughness and glaze flakes to the rims of all of the saucers. This is a 10-1/2" x 8-1/2" ball-footed swing-handle serving basket fully hallmarked for Sheffield, England 1895-6. Made by James Dixon & Sons, this basket has ornate repousse decoration in the bowl as well as attractive design to the ornate handle. It has a presentation inscription in the centre, as it was presented as a gift in September 1896, and it weighs an impressive 595 grams. A pair of early Staffordshire figurines of eagles on vermicular or marble painted bases from 1820-1850. These well modelled heavily gilded 19thC English earthenware eagles are 7-3/4" tall. Both have tilted heads and back-stretched wings. They have purple, yellow and orange marble-like painting on the simple rectangular shape bases. The mustard yellow rocky perches have a blue flower. They not signed with a manufacturer's stamp, unfortunately fairly common with Staffordshire figures. They are in very good, but not undamaged condition. One is undamaged with only a firing crack, which is original to the manufacture of the figurines (see image), and the other has had the lower portion of one wing and the head re-glued. Some wear to the gilding. The breaks and repair are quite clean and it could be restored professionally. The only pair of Staffordshire eagles I have owned in over 40 years selling antiques. The firing crack is very small with only small expected disturbances (including slight browning to the beak of one eagle) which don't detract from the appeal of these unusual figurines. A rare, early English flow blue three piece soup tureen c1850-60. This tureen stands 11" high with the lid, and the matching, fitted underplate measures 14-3/4" x 13". It has a floral style motif, and it has an impressed S as well as a pseudo Chinese mark, minor variants of which were used by Charles Meigh (1835-49), Charles Meigh & Son (1851-61) and also Job Meigh (c1805-34), all of Hanley, Staffordshire; we feel it dates from c1850-60 but it could possibly be of earlier manufacture. This item is in excellent original condition with no chips, losses, damage or repairs other than a tight 1-3/4" craze-like hairline near the lid's finial, some overall crazing, a few scattered craze lines to the bowl. A superb and top quality example of Austro-Hungarian glassmaking at its finest. This is a set of six shell shaped cranberry glass nut dishes c1900 with crisp molding and lush encrusted gold decoration. Attributed to Moser, this set is certainly of the expected quality but we can't definitively confirm this. The set consists of the deep 9-1/2" long and 7-1/8" wide master nut bowl as well as five matching 4-1/2" long and 3-3/8" wide individual nut bowls. The allover hand applied gold decoration is superb and it appears on the outer surfaces as well as on the interior. We have seen only a couple of examples of the smaller dishes only, never the full size master nut dish, and seldom in cranberry and rarely with such ornate decoration. A true prize for any serious collection of Moser or European art glass. This unsigned set appears unused, even after 110 years, and it is in stellar original condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than a 1/16" across flake to the edge of one of the individual dish's edges and the expected minor irregularities expected on hand-painted and hand-finished art glass. A rare and unusual japanese oil lamp lamplighter`s kit which dates to the 19th century or earlier. This wonderful and old set is in a gold-trimmed and black lacquer over wood 8-1/2" x 4-1/2 inch box, which stands 6-1/4" inches high. There is gold trim inside as well as on the underside of the lid, with some minor wear and loss, and there is a bruised corner on the upper base. The interior has a divided compartment, and the lighting tools are inserted into a recress in the base. The tools include a brass base and fitted platform which snaps tightly into place; the tools include a pouring pot in the shape of a teapot for the oil and a receptacle with a hinged lid as well as long brass tongs in their holding slot. The pourer has a removable lid revealing a bat-shaped cutout; the receptacle has a pricket for a candle, which was used to light the liquid-fuelled lamps. The drawers are long and shallow and they smell of incense, and the finely-hinged handles lift up in order for the drawer to be opened. They are also brass, and painted black. These lamplighting chests were utilized by Japanese lamplighters, and this one is unsigned but of undeniably fine quality and construction. A truly unusual item from the distant past, in remarkable condition. A pair of Qing Dynasty Chinese blue and white deep plates from the 1730-1795 era, or possibly earlier. These rare ~9" across survivors are hand painted in blue on a grey ground, and they have the brown Batavian edge glaze. These Qianlong plates are 1-1/4" deep and they have the expected glaze frit, tiny glaze burns, pitting and flaws except for a 1/4" upper rim chip and central burst bubble central glaze flake on one bowl and a 1/4" chip under the rim on the other. Overall they are in fine condition with no cracks, major flaws, repairs or wear, and they would be a fine addition to your Chinese blue and white collection. An Arts and Crafts period 800 silver and cut glass claret jug circa 1900. This antique large claret decanter has a heavy silver handle and hinged top with a ball thumb rest setd on a cut crystal decanter. It measures 13-7/8" in height and 5-1/2" across the base. It is stamped Gebr. Friedland, a Berlin jewellery retai firml, operated by the sons after the death of the founder Friedland in 1829. It has the German silver quality marks (post-1888 crescent & crown stamp), 800 silver, 49961 and the manfacturer's mark for Koch & Bergfeld of Bremen (est. 1829). There is a very finely engraved heraldic family crest with a fish, knight's helmet with three feathers and engraved scrolling. This this top quality rarity is in excellent condition with no cracks, etching or discoloration, silver corrosion or damage, repairs or alterations; there is a 1/4" chip to the crystal on the bottom rim which is only slightly noticeable when the piece is displayed from that side. An 18k Gold key wind fancy case open face pocket watch with key circa 1900. This antique yellow gold 1-5/8" diameter watch has blued hands and a textured gold face. The ornately tooled and engraved case is stamped K18 on the crown and WARRANTED 18 CARAT 92971 inside the back. The dust cover also has this serial number along with CUIVRE J.D. The works are unmarked and they measure 1-7/16" across. The case snaps shut firmly front and back, it has the original key and it runs well. A set of 4 Chinese Qing dynasty tea bowls and saucers. These antique porcelain blue and white 1-5/8" tall tea bowls or cups and 4-5/8" wide saucers date from 1736-1795. It is possible they are slightly older. This antique Chinese porcelain set has a man on a horse holding a small twig, followed by a servant carrying provisions. The background shows a tree starting to flower. My interpretation is that he was looking for indications that winter is over, so the important work of spring can begin. The scenes are the same on the saucers and the outside of the cups, decorated borders, and interior flowers in the cups (possibly prunus/plum), but everything is hand painted, so no pieces are identical. These tea bowls were more likely produced for the Chinese rather than European taste. The porcelain is a fine quality. All pieces are unmarked, and they are in reasonably good condition, but with no losses, damage or repairs other than sone very fine edge chips on the cups and a fine partial hairline crack in one saucer. A pair of English sterling silver matching gravy boats from 1906 by Martin Hall & Co. hallmarked for Sheffield England 1906 - 1907. This antique matched pair of 2 gravy or sauce servers measure 7" from the lip to the edge of the handle and they stand 3-3/4" tall to the handle's top; they have the maker's mark for Martin Hall & Co. Ltd. They weigh 343 grams and have a Celtic design G or G monogram. The feet are a simple trefoil shape. They have a liquid capacity of approximately eight to nine ounces in each gravy boat. They are in very good antique condition with no breaks, losses, damage or repairs other than some surface marks on one boat (which (see pictures) and ordinary signs of use. A Posen 800 silver coffee set for 12 in box circa 1905-10. This stunning, all original set is in its original fitted case; this set consists of twelve 3-3/4" coffee spoons with gilt bowls, sugar tongs, and the ornate silver sugar bowl with the original clear glass liner. The box is green paper wrapped with gold borders and gilt shell clasps; the interior is silk lined with the L. Posen Wwe. retail stamp. It has the designation in the stamp Hoflieferant, which translates as suppliers or purveyors to the Imperial Court, which was granted to this firm in 1903. The well-respected German silver firm Lazarus Posen Witwe (widow) was established in 1869, and was in operation until it was destroyed by the Nazis on Kristallnacht in 1938. Each piece is stamped with the Posen marks, and the bowl features an exquisitely detailed gryphon and wreath openwork design; the inrterior is gilded as well. The 4" diameter sugar bowl has a clear crystal liner with a polished pontil, and there is a sugar tongs as well as the 12 spoons. The box measures 13" x 9-1/2", and this stunning quality set is in excellent condition with no dents, bends, corrosion, losses, damage or repairs and it appears possibly unused. There is only a bit of tearing of the bottom paper, a bit of soiling to the silk on the inside of the lid and some darkening of the gold borders on the exterior.

A rare Bilston enamel cow patchbox with floral 1770-1790. This antique English Georgian period Bilston enamel patchbox or patch box features an enamelled lying cow on the top and a painted porcelain floral on the bottom circa. This 1-7/8" x 1-5/8" copper/brass mounted box was used to hold patches, the applied facial beauty marks popular at this time. It stands 1-1/4" high, and the hand painted cow has a well-painted face, with green, pink, white, yellow and black enamel. The hand painted floral design on the underside is well painted, and the interior has a mirror and white enamel on the top's inside. This item has the following condition issues, which are common to antique examples like this one: enamel losses to the cow's tail and rear flank, an enamel loss to the green grass, cracks and an old restoration to the porcelain floral panel, minor cracking to the surface of the interior white enamel, and cracking and silver losses to the mirror. A fine quality Rose Canton 19th century 9" tall pitcher or ewer. This Qing Dynasty jug features flowers, butterflies and birds and a gold-circled floral medallion. The painting and enamelling are good quality and of Famille Verte colour. Larger examples of the 19thC Rose Canton pitchers are not commonly seen now. An M.J. Tobias Liverpool 18k & sterling engraved face Swiss pocket watch from the 1890s. This 14 size or 18 ligne watch is 1-7/8" across and it has a typical unmarked Swiss bar movement, a fancy engraved 18k yellow gold back cover with Swiss gold markings, a dust cover marked M.J. TOBIAS LIVERPOOL HANDS DETACHED LEVER FULL JEWELLED, and a very fancy engine turned and engraved sterling silver face with a village scene under a silver rimmed open face cover with a glass crystal. It has subtle gilded highlights, a single sunk second hand dial, blued hands and applied silver Roman numbers. Tobias started in Liverpool in 1805 and his family later expanded the watch business and started to export Swiss-sourced watches with varying cases and faces to the U.S. This face is one of a small variety of engraved faces we've seen - other configurations and cases were also made. This watch has been kept in a drawer in an estate for decades and it runs and keeps time for a few minutes and stops; it is very clean however it could use a cleaning, lubrication and adjustment and it is being sold as is without warranty. A scarce English Pratt ware Lord Nelson and Capt. Berry jug made between 1798-1806. We believe it was made to commemorate either the Battle of the Nile (a significant English military battle of 1798) or the battle of Trafalgar (1805), a most significant English military battle still commemorated today in England on Trafalgar Day. This 5-3/8" tall pitcher has stylized portraits of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and Captain Edward Berry with orange, brown, cobalt and green glazes on the high-relief modelling. Prattware is not often found in perfect condition, and this piece is not, either. This jug is un-restored except for a primitive and early reattachment of the bottom of the handle. There is some interior browning and staining, some overall crazing and some exterior browning on the spout. The bottom of the handle is missing and the bottom third has been crudely cemented in place. This jug is well worth having professionally restored, and it is a seldom seen English historic commemorative. It is in fair intact condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or damage other than stated above.

A large pair of European 19thC porcelain figural centerpiece swan bowls. Made as dining room table decorations with an open center for flowers, fruit, etc., these large and beautifully detailed swans are possible German in origin (both are unmarked). A superb and vintage Art Nouveau 12-3/4" across Austro-Hungarian ceramic wall plaque depicting a lovely woman with an earring and flowers in her hair c1905. This terracotta plaque is probably by Ernst Wahliss, and it has an impressed flying dove stamp with a pattern number 1518. It also has a pencil notation 5620/23, which was typical. Some Wahliss items had a foil tag which often became lost. It has a brown border, a black ground and an ivory coloured face with brownish hair. A signed Christopher Dresser Linthorpe pottery plate circa 1880. This superb and rare Linthorpe high relief 8" English pottery plate features a naturalistic branch with leaves with a rustic white/yellow glaze on the front and no glazing on the back. A Sevres style hand painted portrait plate from the 19thC signed Amblet. This late 19thC cabinet or display plate is 9-5/8" across and it features fine gilding, a scalloped edge with high relief gilt vines with a pink ground and a beautiful signed free hand painted central portrait of a pretty young woman picking flowers. The plate has the genuine three part Sevres marks, which include the Louis Philippe 1844 mark (this mark actually dates to the late 19th century), the Chateau de Tuileries wreath and the S. 37 in lozenge year date. A Staffordshire figurine of a goatherd girl on a goat circa 1930 1850. This antique English figure dates to the early to mid quarter of the 19thC. She is hand painted painted fully on front, sides and back. 1830s -1860. It is a fine looking and well painted example reflecting the 19th century Victorian romanticism about farm and rural life with the advancing age of industrialism. People who lived on farms at the time would have found the concept of a girl riding a goat after gathering a basket of fruit possibly a little odd or possibly amusing. Meissen produced a pair of figurines of a tailor and his wife riding goats in the 18thC - possibly this figure was inspired by that. It measures 7 1/2" in height and is 5 1/2" at the widest. It is in mostly excellent condition except for one detail - the tip of the girl's foot is chipped. Other than that, it is in exceptional shape - no cracks, crazing or repairs, and the paint in in excellent shape. There is a firing crack on the back of the girl's neck, but it is original to the manufacture of the piece, and does not detract.We haven't been able as yet to find which English Staffordshire maker produced this. A Chinese export silver 3 piece cruet set with spiders and lizards. This truly unusual and well-made three piece cruet set is in high grade Chinese export silver. Dating to the late 19th-early 20th century, this condiment set has the 2-1/2" high pepper shaker, the 1-1/4" high open salt dish and the 2-1/4" high lidded mustard pot with handle. What makes this set exceptional is the presence of very high relief applied spiders being chased by lizards. The mouths are open on the lizards and the detail is stunning; each piece is on three insect-like legs. Each piece has Chinese silver marks, not a mark I have seen before - but given the unusual use of lizards and bugs, this piece had the look of work by Chinese silversmith Luen Hing. I have not seen this mark attached to any of his known work, so this is merely a speculative opinion. The 3 pc set weighs a total of 115.9 grams, and there is no liner present in the salt dish. A 800 solid hand engraved Italian lidded canister or box circa 1930-35. This lovely silver item is gilded on the interior and it has a lobed design with ornate floral engraving. It could possibly have been for cigarettes, although similar items were also prodiced to hold sugar or tea. It is stamped 800 MILANO and A RONCHI on the bottom. The jewellery firm August Ronchi opened in Milan, Italy in 1929 - this firm sells mostly high end jewellery and watches, but has also produced lovely quality silver items in the past. An R.A. Kidston 20" London scene United Kingdom meat platter circa 1840. This is an early Scottish large blue transferware well and tree meat platter in blue transfer. This platter stands on two bracket feet and the juice well; it is stamped R.A.K. & Co. UNITED KINGDOM LONDON for R.A. Kidston and Co. Finnieston (part of Glasgow) Scotland who used this mark from 1838-1845. The Coysh & Henrywood Blue and White Printed Pottery reference book mentions this series, but not this actual scene of London - I have never run across this pattern piece before. An S Kirk and Sons sterling silver repousse nut serving bowl and matching spoon. The 6-1/2" diameter bowl and 5-1/4" long spoon both have the high-relief floral repousse work this quality American silver firm was known for. It is on on the bowl's rim and on the spoon handle and in the bowl, which also has a relief scene of fruit including pineapple, grape, apple and strawberry. The spoon's bowl measures 2" across. Both pieces have a fancy S monogram, and each is stamped S. KIRK & SON STERLING. The pattern number 409 is on the bottom of the bowl. A Georgian sterling silver large footed master salt dish dated 1817. This simply splendid high quality English Georgian silver open salt dish is fully hallmarked for London 1817. This 3-5/8" diameter and 1-7/8" high bowl has fine high relief and rather unusual rim decoration of a lion head alternating with a shell, surrounded by flowers, with ornate floral feet. It retains the original gilding on the bowl as well. It is stamped with the maker's mark for William Elliot or William Eaton of London. It weighs an impressive 162.6 grams. It has a small lion rampant family crest engraving on one shoulder (not shown). One of the largest and most unusual Georgian silver open salts we have seen. A very rare set of (probably) English 9-7/8" plates in a variant of the original Blue Willow pattern. We haven't been able to accurately identify this pattern with its distinctive border butterflies in our books, however they are definitely Georgian. The porcelain is the expected light gray and the decoration is slightly blurred and each plate has the expected frit and minor variations from the manufacture of these items. It is quite unusual to find a matched set of four of these plates and one has a partial gold seal from the British Antique Dealer Association (B.A.D.A.) which guaranteed that the plates were over 100 years old at the time of sale (many decades ago). A 19th c. hand painted toleware large tray. This decorative, vintage and stunning handpainted and signed large toleware display or serving tray dates to around 1860. This 24-3/8 x 19-3/4" painted metal tray features a large central basket of colourful and varied flowers; it has a floreate stepped edge and the G. J. Rudolph artist's signature. We have been unable to get any information on this artist, however the painting is superb. A pair of English Georgian period sterling silver footed salt cellars or dishes with clear glass liners, fully hallmarked for London, England 1771-2. This antique pair of 2-1/2" diameter salt stands or dips are 1-1/2" high, and they have three hoof design feet. The liners are clear blown glass with a polished pontil, and these salt dips have a maker's mark for Nathaniel Appleton and Anne Smith (London, est. 1771). A stunning hand painted Art Nouveau porcelain centerpiece 1890 1900. This true Nouveau table decoration is likely German or Austrian. This 14-1/4" tall and 10-1/4" wide decorative item would look good on the table or on the mantlepiece. Constructed of two pieces, the bowl and base, it has a figure on a column in the center of the lower bowl, which has finely molded openwork flowing handles. All parts of this display piece are fully handpainted, from the finely detailed face to the fine gold highlights. An ornate Victorian SP ink stand with ink pot, drawer and pen rest 1860. A wonderful mid-Victorian silverplated ink stand with a Feb. 20, 1860 registration date. This 11-1/2 x 7-1/2" stand features a pottery inkwell in a domed lidded brass holder mounted on the deck, which also has a brass pen rest. Besides the ornate hand-engraving, it also has a copper military button mounted with a screw and bolt. The shoulders have a high relief vine and berries design and it has scroll feet. It has a sliding drawer with pen and paper compartments as well, and it has the British registration key and the PP&S maker's mark for Padley, Parking & Standforth of Sheffield, England (operating from 1855-80). An antique embroidered silk with cotton back bed hanging or valance from the Xuantong era in the late Qing period 1908 - 1912. This beautiful fringed antique valance has fine embroidery, including gold thread and multi-color silk thread depicting flowers, butterflies, fish, people and many other symbolic figures and images, with fine short and long stitch embroidery and extraordinarily fine seed stitching. It is mounted on a pinkish cotton backing and it has a fine 7" fringe and edge netting. There are some black silk embroidered characters with the Xuantong era date. It has sewn red loops on the back of the fringe edge for the suspension of some article(s) and the top has a sewn fold for hanging much like a curtain-on-rod. The fabric section measures 81-1/2" x 18-1/2 inches. These fine embroideries were usually made to add to the bed of the newly married couple by the bride or her family. This item is in mostly excellent vintage condition with no tears, losses, damage or repairs other than some minor soiling to the cotton backing and some traces of thumbtacks from previous hangings and slight wear. A 19thC Farrar Batiscan Quebec 4 gallon handled wine jug or crock, for the Marchand & Co spice, wine and liquor merchant. This 18-3/4" tall handled salt glazed stoneware jug still has the cork and it is completely hand thrown. It has a blue floral design identical with other known Farrar examples and it has a blue-wiped impressed legend stating "MARCHAND & CO MARCHANDS EPCIERES VINS ET LIQUEURS BATISCAN 4". Moses and Ebenezer Farrar were from Vermont, and they established one of the earliest stoneware potteries in Canada around 1840. Their first pottery was in St Johns Quebec, and later in Iberville Quebec. Their merchant crocks were usually not signed (by preference of the merchant, who was advertising their own goods). They closed somewhere around 1927, after the death of Ebenezer's son Georg H Farrar ((source: Early Canadian Pottery, Donald Webster, 1971). It is in very good condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than some edge chips near the mouth and some original kiln burning to the blue design. A rare, early English flow blue covered entree or casserole dish c1860. This serving piece stands 7" high with the lid, and it measures 11-1/4" x 10-1/2". It has a floral style motif, and it has a pseudo Chinese mark, minor variants of which were used by Charles Meigh (1835-49), Charles Meigh & Son (1851-61) and also Job Meigh (c1805-34), all of Hanley, Staffordshire; we feel it dates c1850-60 but it could be of earlier manufacture. A rare Georgian whiskey barrel figural string holder. This superb, unusual vintage Georgian whiskey or ale cask figural string holder is from the 1800-30 era. String was a valuable and useful item in the Georgian home, and this holder could also have held embroidery thread for sewing. Made of beautifully figured rosewood with a great patina and trimmed with gilt brass bands held with hand made nails, this string dispenser has a detailed brass spigot through which the string emerges. There is a mounted steel cutting blade in the form of the spigot's handle, and the whole barrel sits on a rosewood plinth. The workmanship is superb, and it has remnants of a velvet-covered bottom. The base measures 3-7/8" x 2-7/8" and it stands 3-1/2" high. Made for a well-to-do household, this holder is in excellent original condition with no corrosion, losses, damage or repairs other than some age shrinkage of the wood causing the brass bands to sit a bit above the wood surface, some minor loss to the gilding and some minor age cracks to the rosewood base.
